The Total Gym 1000 is an exercise system marketed, using infomercials, by martial artist Chuck Norris. It uses body weight as resistance.
The Total Gym 1000 is composed of a body and two accessories.
The body is made from an adjustable metal frame shaped like a right angle triangle with the right angle on the base and a padded board which slides on the hypotenuse. The metal frame can be adjusted to either increase or decrease the tension of the exercise. The higher the angle between the bottom of the board and the ground and the higher the adjustment, the more weight and resistance is required to perform an exercise.
The board runs on ball bearings along the frame and is attached to two hand pulleys. When the hand cables are moved from the pulley, the board (and the person with his or her weight on the board) move towards the top of the frame along the frame's hypotenuse. Body positioning along the board and differing movement of the hand pulleys can be varied to produce over 50 different exercises.
Two accessories, a wing beam and a leg pulley attachment, can be attached to the frame and used to create additional exercises. The wing beam can be attached to the bottom of the machine to allow the performance of squats with the head facing the top of the board, shoulder presses with the head facing the bottom of the board, or assisted chin-ups with the head facing the top of the machine. The arm pulley is not used in these exercises.
